Annihilation by Jeff VanderMeer

3.0

After having watched the movie twice I was intrigued to read the novel it's based on (or inspired by). Annihilation is quite short, barely 200 pages long, but reading it was mentally exhausting. Unpleasant. I wouldn't say it was very scary, rather it did go under my skin similar to how S. Jackson, Kafka and Lovecraft do. Annihilation is a "found footage" novel, a report written by a nameless, unreliable narrator, the biologist. (It's also almost nothing like the movie by the way.) The story is weird and vague. There are no clear answers to any of the mysteries. If you like mind-bending thoughts crawling under your skin read Annihilation. I'm not sure yet, but I might finish the trilogy a little later.
