I always start a book by giving them 4 stars in the back of my mind, and then see how the story proceed to know whether the number can go up or down based off my enjoyment thorough reading. And this book? 3 stars, sadly.
I wanted to like the book so much and perhaps because my mind wasn't as creative as usual, but (in which I'm well aware that I only have myself to blame for that) the whole world-building was so GOD DAMN difficult to get into. The magic system is excellently crafted and I understand why he needed to use as much exposition as he could to explain his reader how scriving works but GOD DAMN I was bored to death. Sancia's dynamic with Clef was the only thing that kept me from dnf-ing the book. Halfway to through the book, I had nothing to be completely excited for. Some of the foreshadowing were suck and I smelt that betrayal long ago.
But it's not like I hate the book like I hate The Poppy War. The characters are the good part of the story. They are believably clever, strong and flawed enough for readers to fear for their safety, and the courses were mostly a result of somene scrumming over them not the way around. The choices were well made, so I appreciated it. The romance was so little I'm practically scraping the bottom of a well, but the gayness! Sancia girl, stop being so obvious and just get along with it. Also, I felt like Orso, Gregor and Sancia's character would've worked even better if Jackson had given them a whole chapter of recollection of what made them to this day, or maybe just a little flashback sequences so that I could at least sympathize even more with them.
Will I read the next book? Definitely. 3 stars ain't a bad rating.
