Brideshead Revisited by Evelyn Waugh

3.0

Even after finishing Brideshead Revisited and reflecting on it, I'm saddened to say I remain indifferent. I don't dislike it, nor am I a great fan of it. I read it, it's finished, and I have no difficulty moving on.

I enjoyed the explorations of relationships with the cast of complicated characters established in this novel, though my appreciation ends there. The story itself felt incomplete. I deem this is apparent in Sebastian's character, which the novel spent a considerable part developing, who disappeared altogether when Charles' attention shifted towards Julia. I can't comprehend Sebastian's departure from the narrative when he's a primary focus at the beginning of the book. Another thing I consider lacking is the ending. I generally appreciate an open-ended when it provokes discussion and reflections, but Brideshead Revisitied didn't manage this. The ending felt half-baked, and this notion lingered throughout the story's entirety.
