The Hope of Elantris by Brandon Sanderson
3.0

*This is a spoiler-free review*

I read this story as part of [b:Arcanum Unbounded: The Cosmere Collection|36384054|Arcanum Unbounded The Cosmere Collection|Brandon Sanderson|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1507596107l/36384054._SY75_.jpg|48765829].

'The Hope Of Elantris' is a very small and rather sweet story. It is set after the main novel, but tells within it a story that takes place towards the climax of the main novel.

This story give us a glimpse, through a side character's perspective, of events that happened "off screen" during Elantris. It does not add much to the context of the story or the world, but functions as a nice character piece.

The character in question is named after a fan, who's early appreciation for Elantris found its way to Brandon through his girlfriend at the time, Emily. I thought this to be a lovely story in itself, the full details of which can be found in the postscript of the story in Arcanum Unbounded.

There were some very cheesy moments, and some rather cliché one-liners, but I liked the structure of a story within a story. The fact that telling stories is a part of the story being told is an added level that I appreciated.

3.5 stars, unfortunately rounded down for the cheesiness. Still, it was enjoyable.

I am nearing Cosmere completion, with only The Emperor's Soul left to read!

But, that will have to wait at least a week or so at least.
Up next I am going to be reading N.K Jemisin's short story collection, [b:How Long 'til Black Future Month?|40855636|How Long 'til Black Future Month?|N.K. The discussion will be hosted over on Discord on the 28th. Please feel free to leave a comment here or message me for details if you are interested in joining us!
