Waypoints: My Scottish Journey
by Sam Heughan
3.5/5
I enjoyed this book quite a bit. I haven’t read a memoir in this style- the perspective of a present 5 day epic hike interspersed with insights into his past. There were times that the transition was jarring, but that could have been because I was listening on audiobook and couldn’t see the ending of sections. I was worried the thick Scottish accent would be hard to understand since I can’t watch Outlander without the subtitles but it was actually lovely hearing him read and I felt it added his personality so much more. The only complaint is that he would whisper or drop his voice really low quite a bit and I would miss what he said entirely.
I really loved hearing about the West Highland Way scenery and history and would love to add that 96 mile hike to my bucket list. I also didn’t know much about his life outside of Outlander so it was nice to hear about his early life and his perseverance of his acting dream. I also didn’t know he had a whiskey and a tequila line and really want to try them now!
