This is a great story that explores a wealth of really interesting ideas (only a few of which are a bit dated) but, sadly, it's not very well written. The writing was a bit like someone took a physics textbook – a really well written one, but not on the level of the popular science writers – and tried to turn it into a narrative story. The story was definitely good enough for me to deal with the clumsy, overly technical prose, but I ended up skimming the appendix with the technical explanations of everything looking for the bits that I had questions about and just glancing at the rest. I can't begin to tell you how much I wish this had a coauthor who was a better writer. I really want to read the sequel for all the fascinating ideas it probably has, but can't bring myself to do it right now.
