Alien: Out of the Shadows by Tim Lebbon

4.0

ALIEN and ALIENS are two of my favorite science-fiction movies. (There are no other movies in the franchise. None. Do you hear me? None.)⁣

I love the intimate submarine story in the first and the all-out-war story in the second. Each, in its own way, is genre-leading in terms of film.⁣

But, like Blade Runner, I dug the not-to-subtle critique of techno-capitalism in an age when science and technology very clearly became indistinguishable from magic.⁣

So—when Audible put out a full cast story that takes place between Alien and Aliens, well, I was all in. Plus the story—which is far more ALIEN than ALIENS—pits Ellen Ripley and a group of unwitting miners against her old foes. ⁣

While the story doesn't really add much to the Alien universe—it really is a mash-up of the two movies—it's still fun as hell to be back with Ripley (although she feels a little less feminist badass in the book, but not offensively so). ⁣

I so much enjoyed the short book—only four hours and thirty-one minutes—that I made dinner, sat on my couch, and spent the evening listening to the audio play!⁣
