The Blackthorn Key
by Kevin Sands
“Tom raised his eyebrows. “Master Benedict keeps cannon fuse?” “We use it to light things from far away,” I said. “You know,” Tom said, “things you have to light from far away probably shouldn’t be lit at all.”
3.5/5
This started out with a lot of promise for me, but ended up losing steam about halfway through. Felt like too many characters that weren't distinctive enough for me to keep them straight. I just had a hard time suspending my disbelief, or forgetting that I was reading about a totally made up scheme for a kid's adventure book. I know nothing else is Harry Potter, but I always kind of hope it will be. It isn't. Still decent enough that I would recommend it to a middle-grade reader.
