Eat a Peach by David Chang, Gabe Ulla
3.0

3 stars because I’m completely split on my feelings here.

I loved the descriptions of food and reading about Chang’s various philosophy’s around food. I appreciated the conversations around mental health and the importance of therapy. I also liked hearing about Chang’s path to getting into the restaurant business. And I thought the afterword was a thoughtful addition to the book and am glad it was included.

But the writing felt a little scattered like there wasn’t a clear vision or direction for the book.

Also, while I appreciated his expression of remorse about the (pretty horrible) ways he has treated his staff and the people around him because of his rage, I’m not sure how successful that discussion of remorse really was. Likewise, while the conversation around patriarchy in the restaurant business was clearly well meaning I’m not sure it went far enough to condemn the patriarchal system. In both of these regards, at times it came across as though building a redemptive image of himself was the main goal rather than actually taking ownership.

All in all, mixed feelings!
