My Dearest Dietrich: A Novel of Dietrich Bonhoeffer's Lost Love by Amanda Barratt

5.0

My Dearest Dietrich is a WWII historical fiction novel by author Amanda Barratt. I wasn’t sure if I wanted to read this intense novel but I kept hearing about it and I’m so glad I read it.

The year is 1942, Dietrich Bonhoeffer has joined Germany’s Military Intelligence as an insider to help end the war. Maria and Dietrich met once again, for the second time, at her Grandmother’s manor. They had met once when she was twelve and now that Maria is a grown woman.

A quote I liked: “above all, a Christian should read the Bible as if it were God speaking directly into each of our lives and individual situations." (p. 71)

I recommend this novel to fans of historical fiction, WWII in particular. Be sure to keep tissues handy.
