Never read a non-Perry Mason ESG book, and this one was indeed a very fun one! I'd have been disappointed if the book hadn't ended with Lam showing off his method for legally getting away with murder, and while it does make me wonder how the hell the characters move on from there by the end (which of course they do), it was very fun.
Honestly, given that my rankings are very "vibes-based" and more about how a book measures up to what I expect it to be than how it measures up to some ideal Classic or whatever, this book probably could have gone higher. It was just perfect easy-reading fun, even more than Perry Mason, which (as much as I enjoy the legal legerdemain) can sometimes be a bit bogged down in technicalities. This one certainly rolls them out, but nestled among a lot of adventure and intrigue and a fun set-up concept, and it was funny enough to balance out some of the more ridiculous hardboiled tropes, which felt mostly tongue in cheek in the end anyway. Curious about the rest of the series now!
