The Mercies by Kiran Millwood Hargrave
3.0

3.5✩
The Mercies is a beautifully written historical fiction taking inspiration from the 1617 Vardø violent storm that resulted in the death of 40 men and the start of the village’s witch trials.

With a lyrical and atmospheric prose, Kiran Millwood Hargrave tells the story of the Vardø women after the tragedy, how they come together as a community and rely on kinship and friendship in difficult times. Kiran immerses us in a beautiful and dense environment from the very first sentences. Her descriptions are rich, well-researched and vivid - complemented by well-fleshed and complex characters.

My only wish is that I would have loved to read the story of the village before the storm. It was harder to completely grasp the changes these women had to live and go through without knowing how their lives were beforehand. I couldn’t feel as connected to them as I wished I would.

The Mercies play on many emotions. It is a stunning book and a part of history that cannot be ignored.
