Poison Princess by Kresley Cole

3.0

The first chapter is absolutely delicious. It is full of chilling intrigue that sucked me in and threatened to not let go. Unfortunately, the first chapter has practically nothing to do with the rest of the story. In comparison, a large chunk of the rest of the novel is a let down.

Excluding the first chapter so that it doesn't outclass the rest of the story, the novel is decent enough. Not great, but decent. The love interest, Jackson, is grating. Between the massive chip on his shoulder, his inferiority complex, and his downright vitriolic personality I had a lot of trouble believing so many ladies were throwing themselves at him as if he were the embodiment of male perfection. That said, I do appreciate the fact he was (seriously) flawed - I just would have preferred those flaws being reacted to a bit more realistically. My other major complaint is that the story, at times, feels like the author tried to include "everything but the kitchen sink." At the beginning, the story has strong elements of horror fantasy. As it progresses we're treated not only to that in the form of tarot based magic, but also to zombies, cannibals, post-apocalyptic dystopian theme, and general teenage shenanigans.

What I did like, is that the author definitely has talent as is evident by the first chapter. The overall concept is an interesting one and the author has a particular talent for weaving delightfully enticing sentences when she wants to. The pacing of the story had a lot of variance, which I found that it kind of worked for me. So all in all, this earned 3 stars from me. The novel was entertaining enough but I can't help that feel like some early promises were never delivered.
