I was afraid to read this one, because it is beloved by so many of my friends, and I worried that built my expectations up too high.
Well, I'm happy to say it lived up to all of my expectations. Jess is an absolutely spectacular heroine. Brilliant, fierce, and yet still compassionate. Dain is a wonderful flawed hero. He does some despicable things, but the author was so careful to give you a detailed backstory that let you understand why. I feel like, without that, we could never have forgiven Dain. Now, a shitty past doesn't excuse him treating others like shit. But understanding it, and seeing him struggle against it, that made all the difference. That plus the fact that Jess is simply not going to put up with his shit. He tries to destroy her, and she definitely turns the tables on him. It is just brilliant.
There's not much else for me to say about this book that hasn't been said - and probably better said - by countless people in their reviews, so I'm just going to leave it with this:
I loved it, and I'm sure I'll re-read it many times in the future.
