The Rules of Royalty by Cale Dietrich
4.0

"“Reputations are a dangerous thing,” she says. “You can spend a lifetime carefully crafting one; all it takes is one scandal for it to all come tumbling down. "

"I know it’s a cliché, but the thing about love is, it happens to you when you stop looking for it. I’d given up on finding someone, and then I walked into that dive bar and saw her. Nothing has been the same ever since."

The Rules of Royalty tells the story of Jamie, whose world is turned upside down when he discovers his father is actually a king. Eager to help his son adjust to life as a gay prince, Jamie's father introduces him to Erik, who becomes his mentor and guide. As Erik helps Jamie navigate his new royal life, a strong chemistry develops between them, even though they both know it shouldn't. Yet, one night could change everything, couldn't it?
This fun and engaging story is reminiscent of [b:Red, White & Royal Blue|41150487|Red, White & Royal Blue|Casey McQuiston|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1566742512l/41150487._SY75_.jpg|61657690] and Young Royals, but with a refreshing twist. While the other novels focused on the challenges of hiding one's sexuality as a royal, The Rules of Royalty embraces it openly, which I really appreciated. It's a welcome change from the countless LGBTQ+ stories that revolve around coming out or dealing with prejudice.
I loved the characters, too. The chemistry between Jamie and Erik was palpable from the start, and I enjoyed watching their relationship unfold at a natural pace. It wasn't overly slow or rushed, but just right. However, I must admit that the subplot involving Erik's grandmother was a bit jarring and didn't quite fit. It felt like the author was trying to create unnecessary drama to slow down the main romance.
Despite this minor quibble, I thoroughly enjoyed this four-star read. It's been a while since I've read such a good YA book. Highly recommended for fans of royal romances and LGBTQ+ stories.
