Maine Characters
by Hannah Orenstein
emotional
Maine Characters tugged at my heart way more than I expected! After her father - whom she had a difficult relationship with - passes away, sommelier Vivian visits his summer cabin and finds something unexpected - his other daughter, Lucy, a local teacher. Every summer, each daughter has spent a separate month with their father at the cabin, but they have never met (and Vivian wasn't even sure a second daughter existed, though she suspected). While Vivian wants to sell, Lucy wants to keep the cabin. Can they spend a summer living there together and make a decision that works for them both?
This was an emotional one, though it had moments of comedy sprinkled throughout. There's a bit of a love story for each woman, but the main focus of the book is their relationships with their father (complicated on both ends) and with each other. It was heartfelt, heartbreaking at times, and charming. I recommend it, but it could be a tough read for those with complicated past or current relationships with their own fathers - or siblings. Thank you, Dutton, for the advanced reading copy, receipt of which did not impact my review.
