bookguyeric 's review for:
A Midsummer Night's Dream
by William Shakespeare
Having reread it after some sixteen years, I'll post some things that have come to mind.
1. Some great banter/insults among the lovers.
2. The final act, in which the nobles make snarky cracks while watching the bad play, "The Most Lamentable Comedy and Most Cruel Death of Pyramus and Thisby" is the model for Mystery Science Theater 3000.
3. As an actor (or as a reader), you can come back to these plays again and again and find more in them. I've played Bottom before, and am doing it again this summer. I'm finding many more comic "beats" in there this time. Shtick hasn't changed at all since Shakespeare's time.
4. Bottom, to me, is a combination of a lot of types and elements: I find myself taking some inspiration from Jackie Gleason, Jon Lovitz's "Master Thespian", Frasier Crane, Warner Brothers cartoons, and even Dr. Zachary Smith from Lost in Space.
