I Think Our Son Is Gay 01 by Okura

5.0

I Think our Son Is Gay is a funny yet touching manga about a mom who believes her oldest son is gay. Tomoko, the mom, is a wonderful ally to her probably gay son Hiroki. She doesn't tease him when his slips of the tongue indicate that he is attracted to men, and she gently encourages his feelings. She also corrects his Dad when he says things that are homophobic or when he chastises other men for not being manly. Tomoko is also very self aware as she tries to be supportive of her son and she her own stereotypes.

The story takes place in the present day as Hiroki starts to fall for a boy named Daigo, and in the past via flashbacks from the mother's point of view. The art work is clear, crisp, and easy to follow. The facial expressions are drawn exceptionally well and conveys the characters' emotions. I look forward to reading volume 2.

I Think our Son Is Gay is a sweet, chaste, and affirming manga for questioning preteens and teens, and the caregivers who love them.
