The Call of the Wild by Jack London
5.0
One of few books that has the power to move me the same now as it did when I first read it two score years ago.
Pulling together / leaping forward as one dog, love of the toil ... London so completely communicates the feeling of belonging and subsuming oneself to the effort of the group and the addictive nature of physical exertion. I confess thoughts of Buck and his fellow teammates have sprung often into my head during distance races, and hard days at work - days that are hard, but satisfying because of everyone pitching in, pulling their weight and getting the job done.
Of course this isn't the main plot of the book, but it's the one that has endeared it to me most.
