Daughter of Black Lake by Cathy Marie Buchanan
4.0

Firstly, I love this era of time. I trace my ancestry back to the Celtic clans and we still celebrate our Scottish heritage at festivals, so I've always been entranced by the Roman invasion of Britain. This was a fascinating look into the traditions the Celtic people kept and how time, progress and tradition truly warred among its people. At its heart, though, this was a story about love and betrayal and mistakes decades in the making.

The characters' relationships in this book were beautiful. Buchanan does an incredible job of weaving these flawed characters together in a way that builds tension, trust and a deep sense of community. I also love books that span generations, and the parallels between Hobble and Devout had me impatient to turn the next page, to get to their next section.

Also, the disability representation in this book was pretty phenomenal (the main character has a disability, but much of the plot does center around the persecution of those with disabilities during this time).

Of course, I have my problems with the book. The book was slow to get into, and I hated how everyone was named after what they did. That part of the book didn't ring true to me, but I also don't know enough about that time period to definitively say there wasn't a naming convention such as that.
