Shattered by Kevin Hearne
3.0
Kevin Hearne continues what has made this series successful and, as always, does it well. I like the liberties he takes with pretty much every religion out there and the way he playfully uses any pantheon he takes a liking to. It makes for a fun romp.
This one was slightly less enjoyable than the others due to the frequent and oft times confusing perspective changes. The way this is handled is jarring at some points and well done at others. I'm not sure how to fix the problem I had with it, which is that he perspectives had to go back in time so the characters were in sync by the end of each shift. While a nice literary device at times I think it was overused in the book.
That only detracted slightly from my enjoyment of this. Outside of that minor complaint it was everything I expected. This series is not and never will be high brow literature. It is entertainment for the sake of entertainment and at that it excels. You can tell the amount of research Hearne does for the different religions by the way it shines through in the story. And he does a good job of writing Granuaile with a female perspective.
Supposedly there are only two books left in the series and I hope that it's left that way. Too many authors fall prey to continuing a series past where they wanted to and the series suffers for it. I really enjoy this series and wishing for that to end might seem odd but if you consider the series that didn't end when the author thought they should I think you'll understand my position. I do want to see what Hearne does next because he's one of my favorite "for the sake entertainment" authors. Hell it could even be in the same world as long as Atticus' story ends where he intends for it to end.
