I love this genre, which I’m calling “alternate near future.” This story had two protagonists, one for each timeline. The earlier protagonist, Orla, was born in 1986 and later one, Marlow, in 2016 (I spent way too long trying to figure out Orla’s birth year and then they just say it in the second half of the book). Both timelines are stories of social media out of control, and both show different ways that people believe that they are, in fact, in control of the social media. It’s also a story of people’s bad choices and in that way it was hard for me to handle. There’s not much real love or caring or friendship and the story seems to substitute mother-love for friend love and I’m not here for that.
