Why My Cat Is More Impressive Than Your Baby by Matthew Inman, The Oatmeal

funny fast-paced

2.0

Good news for fans of The Oatmeal! This book is very, very much right within the Oatmeal's typical style of humor.

That said, the book wasn't for me. I found parts to be redundant, repetitive, and crude in ways that just weren't my style. I did keep that in mind when rating, because I'm not one to low-rate a book when I'm not the target audience. BUT... it *did* earn a lower rating on other fronts, and here's why:

-I think this book is better suited not as a book, but as an online comic. Because of the format of The Oatmeal's usual style, a compilation just doesn't necessarily work the way other compiled comics do.

-The book started super super super solid on the theme of "Why my cat is more impressive than your baby." Then about 1/3 of the way through, it felt like the author ran out of content on that theme and decided to just toss in any sort of vaguely animal/baby/dog/cat/human content that he had available to him to fill the remainder of the space. It no longer felt like a Cat/Baby book but a "here's a bunch of comics I had that sort of kind of tie together not really."

-Some parts were very overdeveloped and dragged on to the point that they were a little beat to death... some parts were so short that you saw a 4-panel and went, "wait, it's over?" and they were kinda mashed together in ways that had no consistent theming at all.

I think the overall concept and idea was good, and if you're a die-hard Oatmeal fan, this will be right for you. If you like The Oatmeal but you're not obsessed with it, you might be better just catching the content online when it pops up. If you aren't that into The Oatmeal, and you don't like potty humor, this book isn't for you, and you might not want to spend time on it.
