After this book, Holland became one of my favorites characters, especially after so much is revealed about his backstory. Lila is (a little) less annoying, though still relatively flat and less compelling compared to the other characters. I really enjoyed the world-building of this series; certain scenes and descriptions still leave me feeling spellbound. However, there are still aspects about the magic system that don’t really make sense, for instance, if Rhy is really dead and is effectively Kell’s puppet, how is he capable of individual thought and sensation ? Overall, I had a great time reading this, and felt the ending was satisfying for the series, but I don’t think I will be reading the new series set in the same world because the amount of explicit blood and violence throughout the trilogy is more than I can handle.
