I'm going to focus on the surprise/twist/whatever you want to call it because that is by far the most interesting part of the book for me - firstly I was not surprised whatsoever when Maxim revealed that he had killed Rebecca. I don't know if I had heard it somewhere in the past and then forgotten it but it still lived somewhere in the depths of my mind or if it truly was just predictable, but I read it with a completely blank face, just thinking "yeah, figures". The thing that DID shock me, however, was when we were told that Rebecca wasn't actually nice or loved or any of the things that we had been lead to believe about her. NOW THAT'S A TWIST! Everything after that truly did seem different - just like the protagonist, I had been fearing for her place at Manderley prior to that reveal, and once she knew the truth I immediately felt much more at ease about it all.
