Ares by Carly Spade
4.0
I loved the first two books in this series, so when the author offered me the third for review, I was happy to accept!
I'll admit, this one is the first four star of the bunch. But that's likely due to my own personal biases than anything else. Because of the god involved in this installment, there's a lot of emphasis on anger and fighting. As someone who spends most of their professional life de-escalating big emotions, it made for a slightly more disquieting read.
I might have mentioned before, but I'll say it again that this series is not one for mythology purists. There are some changes made to the canon for the sake of the current story (Aphrodite and Hephaestus aren't married, and Ares never slept with Aphrodite) but it still keeps a lot of the little details that a lot of other mythology stories may leave out.
The relationship itself was definitely the most charged and passionate out of the three so far. The chemistry was definitely there and I enjoyed how the world building continues to add on top of each other, with more gods and goddesses being introduced. (Personally, I appreciated the mention of Hestia.) The fighting aspect was also clearly well-researched, even if I didn't understand the majority of the terminology.
This can be read as a standalone, but the easter eggs are more fun to see if you read them in order. Otherwise you might get confused as to why the goddess of the Underworld is named "Stephanie." Still, it's a great pick for a romance read. Plenty of angst and steamy scenes to be had.
