Flames by Robbie Arnott

4.0

Robbie Arnott has created a wondrous, alternate Tasmania, imbued with magical realism, and told from a number of points of view. While there were two early chapters where I felt the contrivance of the literary stylings got in the way of the flow, or some paragraphs felt like plodding detail filling, the remaining chapters flowed well, and each new character's perspective and inner voice took you on a whole new journey of discovery and rediscovery. As a first novel, it shows great promise for future offerings.
