The Innocent Mage by Karen Miller
2.0

This is a poorly written novel on a modestly interesting premise. It has a fairly simplistic if cleanly defined fantasy-ish location, not greatly fleshed out but workable. The author has an odd tendency to mix fantasy sounding names with names that sound like they could be your next door neighbor: the Prince is named "Gar" and his father is named "Burl" but his mother is Queen "Dana". And the main non-royal characters are named Mat and Daphne. For me this, along with her tendency to describe in great detail very normal (though delicious) sounding meals kind of messed up the suspension of disbelief. Pacing is truly awful. The basic setup took hours and the book ends on a cliffhanger. I guess the second star is because I at least checked out the second book to find out how that went.

I did want to say, the vocal performer did a really outstanding job throughout this book, and may have been the reason I stuck with it. His use of accents to emphasize ethnic differences in the story and his perfect timing and tone are admirable.
