Unfu*k Yourself: Get Out of Your Head and into Your Life by Gary John Bishop
4.0
Gary John Bishop attempts to make himself stand out in the crowd of self-help books by being as blunt and honest as possible, which I admire. Yet the advice and insights he offers are very much in the same vain of many self-help books, so some of the things I heard in his 2016 book "Unfuck Yourself: Get Out of Your Head and into Your Life" were a bit redundant.
That being said, those things were still impactful and powerful. Bishop doesn't seem interested in sugar coating things, which is helpful when it comes to self-help. Being honest and blunt as much as possible helps to make it authentic.
It's a short and great book for me to listen to for the start of the new year. It's not too taxing on the mind and it's accessible for the common man to be able to grasp.
Bishop comes off as harsh, but it is meant to be a helpful encouraging kind of tone that gets you on your feet.
Some key takeaways I got from this book include the following:
- When it comes to self-talk, the more you tell yourself how hard something is, the harder it will seem. That's why it's important to engage in self-talk that will get you to increase your mood and productivity. It's within our power to decide for ourselves how we think and view the issues going on in our lives.
- Being willing to make a chance is a good start to getting ourselves to improve our own lives. It shows that we are aware of ourselves. It also helps to figure out what we're willing to do and unwilling to do because it allows us to take action.
- We are wired to win, even if we don't see it that way. We may think we're losing in life, but when we keep at it, we come to realize every step of the way is a win itself.
- When we look at how far we've come and the things we're able to overcome, we realized that we got this.
- Uncertainty is where the change and work happens. Embracing it can help us achieve things we didn't think possible.
- The key to becoming relentless is to focus on what's ahead of us.
- Sometimes it's not enough to talk the talk. We also need to walk the walk if change is going to happen.
