The Mars Room
by Rachel Kushner
So ok this book had a REALLY slow start. Then suddenly just when I thought I would never care about any of the characters, I cared about ALL of them. Then it was over without really wrapping any of the stories up—although how could any of them be wrapped up when life in prison really has no end? So maybe that was the point.
But riddle me this...what’s up with Gordon Hauser? Did he really exist? Was he actually a split personality of Romy’s? Why couldn’t he find anything about her on google? Why did he launch into this whole pages long “memory” about a convict escaping from prison? What about Romy’s dream that she was with Gordon and he was drowning in the water then suddenly she had another dream where a man wanted to drown himself and then the man morphed into her? What about the three passages in different font that have no assigned narrator? WHAT ABOUT THE FINAL PARAGRAPH IN THE WHOLE BOOK?
I’m probably over thinking this, I get that. But if I AM overthinking it, then what was the point of all of the above?
