Lord of Chaos by Robert Jordan

5.0

"We are always more afraid than we wish to be, but we can always be braver than we expect."

I really enjoyed this one. Despite the ever-present insanely awful writing of female leads, I gave this 5 stars. I'm just accepting it because it's unchangeable and I'm enjoying the series otherwise. Rand's constant perspective throughout this one was fantastic, especially his fight for control with Lews Therin. I have a theory that it is separate from the Dark One's taint, but we'll see how it plays out.

I love that Jordan has shifted the reader's opinion of the Aes Sedai from meddlesome but ultimately good willed and selfless (Moiraine), to meddlesome, inept, condescending, inflexible, cruel, and at times evil. And also incredibly misguided Rand's capture and torture really drove this home. Similarly his forced bonding which absolutely enraged me.

The appearance of Mazrim Taim (I think a Forsaken in disguise) and the Asha'man and the strength and capacity for destruction was shocking and makes it clear why women are so terrified to let them live. I loved the return of Perrin's POV and Rand's encounter with girls form the Two Rivers to show just how much he has shed the identity he started with.
