The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros
4.5
emotional reflective slow-paced

I've meant to read this book for a while, and it feels ironic that the thing that made me read it was me going to have to teach it.

I understand why this book is a classic. It feels short, with all the vignettes, but it packs a punch. All these characters wafting in and out of the story, some with good stories, some with confusing stories, some with sad stories. Some come back again; others don't.

The ending hits so hard: Esperanza has been unhappy (and happy) on Mango Street, and there's not a lot of "good" shown here. And yet, it is still where she grew up. She still holds the stories of the house and her neighbors. She still comes back.

What do we owe to the people around us? What do we owe to the communities that formed us?
