Pride and Papercuts
by Staci Hart
“I’ll forgive you on one condition.”
“Anything.”
“Kiss me.”
Smiling, he leaned in and said against my lips, “Always.”
Pride and Papercuts is the latest Jane Austin inspired, modern retelling of Pride and Prejudice, by Staci Hart. She's worked her way through Austen's catalogue with all the flair and panache that is Staci Hart. Once again, she bridges the Bennet Brothers series and the Austen series with characters that cross into both worlds; Jett and the lone Bennet daughter Laney, and introduces us to Liam and Georgie Darcy.
This story is so delightful, with all the angst that the Darcy/Bennet love connection conjures. Hart crafts a story that while focused on Laney and Liam, keeps the reader very aware of the other connection, the one between Jett and Georgie love. What's so beautiful is that we get a blissful feels from the insta-love connection between Jett and Georgie, carefully balanced again the hate to love, slow-burn between Laney and Liam.
We also get all the usual antagonist suspects; the cad Wyatt Wickham, and the Liam and Georgie's conniving aunt, Catherine de Bourgh, who seeks revenge on the Bennet family. But true love won't be thwarted. All told with Harts equally exquisite poetic writing style, we get all the feels.
I've loved many a film adaptations, but I can't recall every reading another authors work inspired by it, but I am most certain there is no one who does an inspired version better than Staci. She captures all the key moments with a mastery that shows her adoration of the original story, but keeps it true to her characters. 5++ Stars and recommendation.
