Help, Thanks, Wow: The Three Essential Prayers by Anne Lamott

4.0

I have read Anne Lamott before, and I loved her work. My favorite thing about her writing is how strong her authorial voice is, how genuine and honest she is. Help Thanks Wow was no different.

It’s a quick read, and one full of insight into the mystical act of prayer. It discusses the mystery of it, but also the quotidian earthliness of it. The visage of God and our pathway to it is explored from many perspectives, and then distilled into three humble prayers: help, thanks, and wow.

I enjoyed the journey with her through these three prayers, each examined in turn. It made me feel like prayer was accessible, with its churchly trappings stripped away by Lamott and her refreshingly human approach.

I recommend this book to anyone who is going through a hard or stressful time, as it reads like your best friend sitting next to you and giving you encouragement. It would also be a great fit for anyone who just wants a different perspective on prayer. Another great work by Lamott. I am eager to find another title!
