The Canceling of the American Mind: Cancel Culture Undermines Trust, Destroys Institutions, and Threatens Us All—But There Is a Solution by Rikki Schlott, Greg Lukianoff

This book was thought-provoking, though there was a good bit of analysis in it that I did not agree with. Nonetheless, it challenged me to be more nuanced in how I engage people/ideas I disagree with and to be more gracious with people in general.

The Perfect Rhetorical Fortress used by liberals involves dismissing an argument based on the speaker's political identity (conservative), race, sex, sexuality, gender, phobic, associations, lose their cool, speaker violates a "thought terminating cliche" like: they were "punching down" which is taken as condescending and thus all else can be dismissed; emotional blackmail; hint that something else is really going on. Ultimately, it is about not engaging the actual argument.

on the right, there is the Efficient Rhetorical Fortress: 1) you don't have to listen to liberals 2) you don't have to listen to experts 3) you don't have to listen to journalists 4) you don't have to listen to anyone who is not pro-Trump
