Pocahontas: Medicine Woman, Spy, Entrepreneur, Diplomat by Paula Gunn Allen
Did not finish book. Stopped at 32%.
I tried to look past some of the historical inaccuracies presented towards non Indigenous study, but when my coworker said that the NA advisor was shunned from their community and that this was merely a thesis. So I did some digging. I realized that I let way too many historical inaccuracies that I was letting slide and I discovered that Allen never talked to the surviving members of Pocahontas’ tribe or any tribe from the East Coast (and there are many surviving tribes). This could have been so good- like connecting other Indigenous oral histories and European folktales to what Pocahontas and her contemporaries could have been experiencing- but Allen needed more editors who were historians, needed to talk to tribal members of the East Coast tribes, and work to make the book more cohesive as a whole.
