Beautiful World, Where Are You by Sally Rooney

5.0

After finishing Beautiful World, Where Are You, I really needed to sit with my feelings on this novel for a while, as Sally Rooney is frankly becoming my favourite author within the Fiction space and I wanted to be concise with my feelings.

Rooney's unique characteristic style is often a point of contention, mainly the lack of quotation marks, however I find them to be rather an archaic convention. This style truly shines in the story, whilst highlighting incredibly adult conversations about class struggles, speech and even speaks about the treatment of women within the porn industry.

Ultimately though, this, like Rooney's other novels, focuses on both platonic and romantic personal relationships and how our characters struggle with navigating love, sex and communication.
I adored her commentary on the fact that we are seeing human beings destroy the planet but despite this, love, sex and friendship seems to be every ones focal point.

Instead of feeling connected to the characters like her other books, it was more a connection to their relationships and also the stories they told.
Rooney's ability to marry profound and intellectually stimulating conversation with ordinary and very obviously flawed characters is completely unparalleled.

An incredibly mature departure from an incredibly promising voice, Beautiful World, Where Are You, is perceptive, thought provoking and potentially Rooney's best work to date!
