Malice by Heather Walter

WOWZERS

Is this the sapphic Wicked I never asked for?

Naw, but since I never wanted that, Malice is better.

Alyce is the green Cinderella turned Maleficent for this world's cursed queer sleeping beauty.

All hail Heather Walter, modern Queen of surprise twists. The plot gets SO JUICY toward the end. Don't go in expecting a typical happy ending, though. Expect outrageous things.

People in their reviews complained about tropes and this being cliche.... but I didn't really get that from it--as long as You're down for vague fairy tale refs. I didn't find it especially tropey or predictable.

Just the horrifying nature of the world--in which half-fae weirdos spend their literal lifeblood for rich people to dye their hair or clear their zits--makes this book pretty atypical. Actually, the worldbuilding is really unique. I guess I'm not much of a fantasy reader, but I definitely haven't read anything like this.

Um, but, fair warning: the sequel does not live up. Like, just pretend like this was the end.
