Seemed semi autobiographical from the little I learned about the author (basically the intro). Must have been cathartic and therapeutic to write which is why I feel guilty in admitting it was like reading someone's journal, with all its ramblings and randomness, rather than a book. It was mostly sad and weird without much of a plot.
Certain parts were relatable though and reading this in 2025 I keep trying to remind myself the importance and relevance this would have had in the 60's when feminism and mental health, particularly women's, were not as openly discussed.
I can see this being a precursor of books like My Year of Rest and Relaxation, the couch sections with the indifferent psychiatrist were certainly v similar. In a sense it's ahead of its time while also being very much a product of its time with the characters 'traditional' and misogynist views.
Book club March 2025 pick. Theme: Welsh authors and books set in Wales.
