The Tryout: A Graphic Novel by Christina Soontornvat, Joanna Cacao

4.0

Another fun middle grade graphic novel about friendships, acceptance, and growing up. I really love the character Christina. She loves her parents, struggles to put herself out there without her bestie, and eventually grows to stand up to the casual racism at her school. I like that the author takes the time to explore Christina's character as a Thai daughter and a lover of stories. And Megan is a great BFF, as the only other person of color she meets in her new Texas town.

What's really fun about this book is seeing Christina grow from a meek girl that is afraid of how fast her bestie is growing in her sports and friendships to a girl that can exist and find her own fun interests and friends while still holding onto the one person that understands her the best. And the art is fun too. The characters are fleshed out, even the few sides we have.
