I suspect this is an unpopular opinion of this book, but I had a very hard time getting into the story.
It was okay. I didn't hate it, but I also don't think it was anything special. It just didn't feel very distinct and interesting to me? The plotline felt a bit like a rehash of the one from the original duology: weird deaths that need to be investigated, opposing sides vying for control of Shanghai, slow-burn love stories because everyone refuses to communicate. The spy/assassin aspect was kind of interesting, but not enough. The characters didn't even really feel distinct either, or well-developed. It just fell flat for me.
I held out on this review in hopes that the second book would improve this book for me (OVE was much better than OVD), but it definitely didn't. Not for me maybe.
