House of Hearts
by Skyla Arndt
The vibes in this book are immaculate, the mystery is compelling and unputdownable, and the romance is tension-filled and utterly delicious. In short this book was spectacular and perfect for your Fall TBR.
I actually almost skipped this book, as I have a tumultuous relationship with YA in a contemporary setting. I am so very glad I didn’t! This book is good for a number of reasons but something I really enjoyed is that is seemed to transcend a specific time period. Sure there were cell phones, cars, and social media but somehow it was also easy to forget that we were in a modern day setting. Which, imho, made the gothic, spooky vibes even better! Honestly, I’m still not sure if this book takes place in 2010 or 2025 - and I LOVE that.
This book also handles the exploration of grief so well and asks one of my favorite questions, what does it mean to be a monster?
What’s to love…
- dark academia
- gothic vibes
- atmospheric without being overly descriptive
- the TENSION
- the romance is top-notch
- the mystery will have you staying up late to finish!
- less than 300 pages
- themes of grief, and what it means to be a monster
- perfectly creepy and suspenseful
- a sprinkle of light horror elements (but just a dash)
What’s not to love?
- I loved everything about this book! I wouldn’t have been mad a just a hair more romance, although I think thats a personal preference rather than an actual book issue!
