The Dragonbone Chair
by Tad Williams
adventurous
slow-paced
This has a nostalgic, classic fantasy feel. You can clearly see how The Dragonbone Chair influenced authors like George R. R. Martin and Robin Hobb.
Simon is hard to connect with. He’s bland, often frustrating, and very much a clueless 15-year-old. I often wished we had more perspectives from characters like Josua, Maegwin, Miriamele, or even Pryrates, who all felt more complex and compelling. Thankfully, Binabik and his wolf bring wisdom and charm. I’m curious to learn more about the trolls and the Sithi.
Some of the abrupt shifts to political scenes were a bit disruptive and hard to follow. I enjoyed the prose, and I’ll continue the series to see how Simon develops and how the world’s cultures unfold.
