Rating and reviewing short story collections are difficult for me, for if one or two of the stories are good and worth your time, but the rest fall short, how do I convey that through a star rating?
That's my issue with The King in Yellow.
The first couple of stories in this collection are good! Not amazing, but solid, with a fun eerie feeling. But as the stories progressed, they simply got worse and worse to me, and by the end I found that the majority of the stories fell flat to me. Ideas are there, and some beautiful prose (which is often enough for me), but they just didn't click for me.
Still, simply for its impact on the genre, I still feel like The King in Yellow deserves a permanent spot on my bookshelf.
