The Valley of Fear
by Arthur Conan Doyle
The most mediocre Holmes novel in my opinion. The best, of course is [b:The Hound of the Baskervilles|8921|The Hound of the Baskervilles (Sherlock Holmes, #5)|Arthur Conan Doyle|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1355929358l/8921._SX50_.jpg|3311984] as is the larger consensus far as I have seen. The special formula that makes these stories and Holmes is when he is in his element or the story is focused around him. All the other three novels other than Hound of Baskervilles, focus more of the backstory of a character who is critical to the main story and the thing is that the backstory just draws on and never stops, sometimes occupying the whole of the second part of the novel, which in my opinion makes one lose interest. And that is precisely what happened here.
The back story of John Douglas however engaging just felt like I was reading another novel altogether, the twist near the end is let's say it's good, kind of predictable if you are smart enough or have been reading Sherlock Holmes' stories for a while. The whole back story felt like an episode of Peaky blinders set in America.
Liked the ending somewhat. Ends like a movie.
