Four Aunties and a Wedding by Jesse Q. Sutanto
4.0
If you loved the first Aunties book, then you are in for a WILD ride with this follow up!
Before diving in, I want to first mention the author’s note at the beginning. She discusses Asian diaspora and how not all Asians and Asian families are the same and assumptions/ stereotypes shouldn't be made because the truth is they can be polar opposites. This note totally resonated with my Chinese American self and I really appreciated it to start!
The story centers around Meddy and Nathan’s impending wedding which is full of chaos! From chapter one I was already giggling at being thrown back into Meddy’s life with her hilariously endearing family. Meddy and her mother + aunties return in all their wonderful and fiery glory and do they know how to make an entrance!
Now, mix Meddy’s family with another crazy bunch and madness ensues! Staphanie (love the name) along with her uncles and grandmother seem like the perfect wedding vendors! But then Meddy realizes they’re actually mafia and planning to take out a target at the wedding… and of course Meddy and the aunties cannot have that happening!
What proceeds is more laugh out loud moments and shenanigans! Somehow these aunties always happen to find themselves in unthinkable situations yet somehow manage to (unknowingly?) finesse their way out of it all!
Part mystery, part romance & family, this book covers it all and had me hooked! I wanted to know about the mafia ties and who was being targeted and why! The final reveal ended up making so much sense and I loved seeing everything come full circle and connect with the first book.
Like I mentioned earlier, I also loved the conversation around culture and family and how apparent the stark contrasts between Meddy’s traditional Indo-Chinese one vs Nathan’s more proper mixed British Chinese one. There were moments where you could really feel Meddy’s conflict over her family’s antics, but ultimately I loved the message that family is family!
This one was a super quick read and I highly recommend if you love cozy mysteries!
