It's Lonely at the Centre of the Earth by Zoe Thorogood

4.0

I love how this book utilizes the format of a graphic novel. Representing people as different animals? The pops of color when the story is taking place inside of her head? Having the same character in different styles to represent all the different thoughts in her brain? Amazing. I'm a little less enthusiastic about the meta elements - it feels a little "ha ha, so quirky" at times. But when they're done right, they're done right. At the best parts of this book, I could find myself delving into her mind while also looking into mine - it had a similar effect as David Lynch's best movies. This was a little annoying at times, but overall really heartfelt and enticing - I blew through it in a day. Zoe Thorogood has a lot of potential as a creator and I'm looking forward to what she does in the future!
