Micah Johnson Goes West by Sean Kennedy

4.0

This story begins where the first book left off. Micah has to move a long way from his family and friends, and his boyfriend, as happens in athletics where the athletes pay for their big salaries with total lack of control over where they end up. Micah finds himself alone in a new city, trying to prove himself to a new team. His mentor teammate, Sam, is a good guy and his family does their best to make Micah feel at home, but Micah ends up turning to drinking and anonymous sex to feel better. And in the aftermath, feels worse, then does it again.

There's a lot of pressure on Micah, and he doesn't handle it very well, but you can tell he's trying hard. He's managing to lose a bit of the chip on his shoulder that gave him problems in the past, and he begins to see other people in a more complete light, and less in relation to who they are to him. We get to see a bit more of Dec and Simon, and a glimpse of the obnoxious Jasper, but the focus is on Micah. It takes some shake-ups, and some mistakes, but here we see Micah really growing into his potential at last.
