I read this as a buddy read with some members of the Currently Reading Bookish Friends. We read one chapter every couple days to really let the information sink in. Clint Smith is an amazing historian, bringing together the history of each location along with his experience while visiting.
As with all things related to slavery in the U.S, I am continually saddened by the depth of what I don’t know and the history that has been covered up for so long. But I am grateful to authors like Smith who are willing to share their research and experiences with us.
