The Bassoon King: My Life in Art, Faith, and Idiocy by Rainn Wilson

5.0

It's obvious why I picked this book up (technically, I selected it as an audiobook, but that's getting into technicalities). I LOVE THE OFFICE!!!!

The Office is something that I recently started watching (just this year). A lot of people had told me about it and said 'IT'S THE BEST SHOW EVER!!!' And I was always like 'Kk, don't get your panties in a wad. I'm sure it's nice, but don't go all crazy.' That was my reaction till I started watching it. Soon, I became the person who went around screaming at random people - 'HAVE YOU WATCHED THE OFFICE (US)? IT'S THE BEST SHOW EVER. OMG, YOU HAVE TO WATCH IT. IF YOU HAVEN'T, I DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU'RE DOING WITH YOUR LIFE!'

Basically, I feel very strongly for the show.

But this book, it isn't about the show. At least, not just the show. It's about Rainn Wilson - the amazingly talented man who played Dwight K. Schrute in the said beloved TV show.

I read some reviews before I started listening to it (the audiobook is what you should listen to, I'm sure the book is fine but the audiobook took it to another level - more on this later). I knew that the book wasn't going to be a deep dive into The Office and how it functioned and into the lives of the cast and crew. This book was about ONE person and it was about the entirety of his life thus far.

The book started off with his childhood - which is just short of amazing. Living with kooky parents, a separation, and then living in Nicaragua with a pet sloth and parrot that just screeched 'Jose!'? Yeah, that's the sort of life I'm talking about. Quickly it progressed into his adolescence, his journey into theatre, college, love, his ventures (SoulPancake) and so much more. Of course, it did also have a few chapters on The Office and I laugh-cried through all of it.

Rainn Wilson is beyond funny. Every 3 minutes (at a minimum) I would either burst into laughter or cry. Why cry? Because I was so profoundly affected by his thoughts on spirituality and his naked candour. His thoughts of the Baha'i faith and life in general spoke to me from his mouth, to my phone to my soul.

So I'm going to stop now, because I feel like I sound like a crazy person, totally in love with Rainn Wilson (which might be a little true - though I'm not that kind of crazy, just the normal kind). But before I stop, I would encourage you ALL to read* this book. I hope it touches you the way it touched me.

P.S. The foreword is by Dwight Schrute and that's AWESOME.

*I said you should read the book, but really you should listen to the book. There is an audiobook available and I feel like this medium takes the book to another level. You can listen to Rainn Wilson saying the jokes in his way, him imitating a Moroccan kid or a Romanian director, literally hear his voice that reflected the ups and downs of his life. Urgh, it's fantastic and totally worth it!
